What You Will Learn on the Hill Skills Course
Across two days, you will take part in a mixture of indoor learning and practical outdoor training. The Hill Skills Course covers everything you need to safely plan, prepare for and complete your own hill walks.
Planning
You will learn how to plan a walk from start to finish, including choosing suitable routes, calculating timings, understanding terrain and interpreting key features on maps. This is an essential part of the Hill Skills Course and forms the foundation for building good decision-making.
Walking skills
Your instructor will introduce you to important walking techniques that help you move efficiently across different types of ground. You will learn about pacing, energy management, nutrition, hydration and how to walk comfortably over uneven or rough terrain — all key elements of the Hill Skills Course.
Clothing and equipment
Knowing what to wear and what to carry is vital for hill safety. The Hill Skills Course explains layering systems, waterproof clothing, rucksacks, footwear, emergency kit and recommended equipment for day walks.
Weather Awareness
Weather plays a major role in hill walking. You will learn how to read weather forecasts, how conditions change in the hills, what signs to look for when you’re out, and how to adapt your plans based on weather patterns.
Navigation Skills
Navigation is at the heart of the Hill Skills Course. You will learn how to use a map and compass, understand contour lines, follow bearings, identify features, relocate your position, and apply simple strategies to stay on track while walking.
Environmental Understanding
Good hill walkers respect the environment. You will learn how to minimise your impact, understand local habitats, follow the Countryside Code, and appreciate the landscapes you are exploring.
Hazards and Emergency Procedures
You will be taught how to recognise common hazards, how to manage risks and what to do in an emergency. This includes understanding terrain hazards, weather risks, basic emergency procedures and how to summon help if needed.
What to Expect During the Hill Skills Course
Each day begins at 9am with a short indoor session where you meet the group, discuss the plan and learn the foundation skills for the day. You will then head out into the hills to apply your learning in real terrain. At the end of each day, there is a brief review session to reflect on what you’ve learned and prepare for the next day.
Expect to be walking for 4–5 hours each day, usually on rough footpaths and uneven ground typical of upland landscapes. The pace is relaxed, friendly and designed to allow plenty of time for learning, questions and practice.
